      • Strengthening California Journalism

For more than 140 years, the core mission of the California Press Foundation has been to strengthen the future of California journalism through a variety of grant and internship programs. Cal Press partners with educators to help fund journalism programs at California high schools, community colleges and universities. Our internship programs help develop mentorships and networking opportunities for students who are interested in a career in journalism.

We aim to assure the future and integrity of California journalism through education and professional support, by recognizing and honoring contemporary achievements, by guarding the history and traditions of California journalism and providing a social and educational forum for our members.

      • Donate

Cal Press is about membership and philanthropy. Membership is free, and members'

contributions support various Cal Press grants.

These contributions go directly to the support of training and education for high

school, college, university and professional journalists, both individually and

institutionally. Additional funding supports historical preservation projects and

Newspaper in Education programs. Your generous contribution goes toward the general

funding of all of these programs.

The Cal Press endowment funds internship grants for college students at California

news companies. Help us assure the future of California journalism by donating today!

      • Outreach

The California Press Foundation arranges visits by newspaper people to campus journalism classes, regional and statewide educational events, and to community civic events around the state.

Cal Press delegates also take the call in presenting grants to student journalism programs and are enlisted in screening applicants for the association’s internship grants program.

      • Interns

The California Press Foundation awards grants to select students who demonstrate an exceptional interest in pursuing careers in the media business in California.

The students must seek and secure the internship on their own at news companies that belong to the California News Publishers Association (CNPA). Internships, which can occur in spring or summer, must be full-time and last at least six weeks.

For a list of former interns click here.

        Equipment Grants

The California Press Foundation has issued equipment grants to more than 140 campus news programs since 2000. Contributions from individual Cal Press members and supporters provide the grants.

      • Our History

One of the earliest press associations in the country, the California Press Association was founded in 1878 at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco. In 1925 and 1926, the association worked with the Southern California Editorial Association to form a trade organization—the California Newspaper Publishers Association. In 2013, the 136-year-old Cal Press Association merged with the CNPA Foundation, CNPA’s 501(c)(3) charitable division, formed in 1993, to form the California Press Foundation.

The association also gives public recognition at its annual winter meeting to outstanding newspaper people of the state, past and present, with six of the most coveted awards in California journalism:

Justus F. Craemer California Newspaper Executive of the Year Award, the Philip N. McCombs Achievement Award, the Jack Bates Award, the Mark Twain Award for Journalism Excellence in California, and the California Newspaper Hall of Fame.
