Cal Press has supported journalists and journalism in California for more than 140 years through grants, internships and partnerships with industry and educational institutions. With the continued evolution of news platforms and the ongoing pressure of the traditional business models, the Cal Press board of directors is unanimous in their desire to align the organization to provide inclusive and equitable support for future generations of diverse journalists.

The successful Tim Crews Fellow - using a recently developed Strategic Plan - will lead the board and organization through this critical transition. Elements of this transition include:

        • In cooperation with Cal Press staff, develop project funding plans, including donor materials, target lists, outreach programs and events.
        • Engagement with the Board of Directors and Governance committee on issues related to board composition, bylaw modification and new member onboarding.
        • Working with external consultants (already engaged) develop, test and gain approval from Board of Directors for adoption of new organization logos, branding and external-facing materials.
        • Working with members of the Board of Directors, create programs to forge cooperative partnerships between Cal Press and strategic funding partners throughout the state including Community Foundations and private and public foundations.
        • Develop processes that will provide structure, consistency and engagement for Cal Press’ external communication programs across multiple platforms including social, email and others deemed appropriate.
        • Working with the Board of Directors and journalism educators, develop programs that will create greater engagement with high school, community college and university students, which may include contests, in-classroom curriculum or seminars.

The successful candidate will be a skilled entrepreneur, outreach specialist and excellent communicator. They will be a champion for journalism, education and diversity, equity and inclusion. They will be passionate about processes and projects, a self-starter and not afraid to tell the truth to power. Experience in the non-profit space and engagement with boards of directors is preferred but not required.
